Ingredients

  • 4 lbs pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 cups BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 12 sandwich buns or brioche rolls
  • Optional: coleslaw for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pork: Season pork shoulder with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, and onion powder. Rub evenly on all sides.
  2. Slow Cooker Method: Place sliced onion at the bottom of the slow cooker. Add seasoned pork on top. Pour apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of BBQ sauce over the meat. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 6 hours until tender.
  3. Oven Method: Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C). Place pork in a roasting pan with onions and liquid. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 3 hours or until meat is fork-tender.
  4. Remove pork and shred with two forks. Discard excess fat. Mix shredded pork with remaining BBQ sauce.
