Baked Ziti with Ricotta

Ingredients
- 1 lb ziti pasta
- 2 cups marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)
- 1 lb Italian sausage or ground beef (optional for meat version)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 ½ cups ricotta cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cook ziti pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and sauté until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- If using meat, add sausage or ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
- Stir in marinara sauce, dried basil, and oregano. Let simmer for 5-10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and half of the Parmesan. Mix well.
- In the prepared baking dish, layer half the cooked ziti, half the sauce mixture, and dollops of ricotta. Sprinkle with mozzarella.
- Repeat layers with remaining pasta, sauce, ricotta, and top with mozzarella and remaining Parmesan.
- Cover loosely with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
